12 Week Goal Setting System

Regarding goal-setting, I have a very effective strategy that leads to success. Here’s how I do it:

Choose a Word for the Year

My word of the year last year was “transitions”. I knew it would be a transitional year. This year, my words are “action” and “freedom”. I’ll put into action all the prep and planning I did last year to spark more freedom in 2023.

Use the 12-Week Year System

Instead of setting goals for the whole year, set three new goals every 12 weeks. I like to think of these three goals as my quarterly priorities.

Create a Clear Goal Statement

You should start your goal statement with an action verb. You need to make sure they’re clear and specific enough for a 5-year-old to understand.

Set Milestones & Steps for Each Goal

We can think of a goal, put it on a list, and move on, but I’ve found that method doesn’t work. It isn’t just about determining WHY you’re doing something, but more importantly HOW you will achieve that goal. Make milestones your overarching wins, and then break down how you’re going to accomplish those milestones. When you’re super clear about what action steps you have full control over, the impossible suddenly feels doable and possible.

Just try it, and see what happens.

Determine Your Side-Quests

Side-quests are goals that you can work on throughout the year, that you’d like to start working on this quarter. They’re critical, but they’re less energy-consuming. For example, go on a trip.

Have Quarterly Intentions & Fasts

You should take stock of what drains your energy and focus throughout the year and pick something to fast from.

Brainstorm Fun Activities for the Quarter

Last year I tried making bucket lists for every season, and it was like the secret to happiness! You gotta have things to look forward to.

Create a Vision Board or Video

Last but not least, go to Pinterest or TikTok and gather images or videos that reflect your priorities for the year. Use Canva, Photoshop, a video editor, or Moodzer to create a collage that represents your goals. It’s so helpful to have this visual aspect. You’ll want to make the vision board wallpaper for your phone or computer desktop, and if you’re making a vision video (I recommend keeping it to 1 minute), and keep it on your phone.
